What is ISO 9001:2015?

ISO 9001:2015 is an international standard for quality management systems (QMS) developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It sets out the criteria for a quality management system and is based on a number of quality management principles, including a strong customer focus, involvement of top management, a process approach, and continual improvement.

The ISO 9001:2015 standard provides a framework for organizations to establish, implement, maintain, and continually improve a quality management system. It is applicable to any organization, regardless of its size or the industry it operates in. The standard is focused on ensuring that an organization consistently meets customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements while enhancing customer satisfaction.

Key elements of ISO 9001:2015 include:

Context of the Organization: Understanding the organization and its context, and identifying the needs and expectations of interested parties, including customers.

Leadership: A strong emphasis on leadership commitment and involvement in the quality management system.

Planning: Establishing objectives and making plans to achieve them, considering risks and opportunities.

Support: Providing the necessary resources, including competent personnel and infrastructure, to support the operation of the QMS.

Operation: Planning and controlling the processes needed to meet product or service requirements.

Performance Evaluation: Monitoring, measuring, analyzing, and evaluating the performance of the QMS.

Improvement: Continually improving the effectiveness of the QMS through corrective actions, preventive actions, and a focus on innovation.

Organizations seeking ISO 9001:2015 certification must demonstrate compliance with these criteria during an audit by a certification body. It's important to note that these criteria provide a framework for quality management, and organizations may need to tailor their QMS to meet their specific needs and circumstances.

ITAR Registration

Great Lakes Engineering is an ITAR registered company. A copy of our ITAR registration can be found here.

What is ITAR?

ITAR stands for the International Traffic in Arms Regulations. It is a set of United States government regulations that control the export and import of defense-related articles and services on the United States Munitions List (USML). The U.S. Department of State administers ITAR, and its purpose is to regulate the export of defense and military-related technologies to safeguard national security interests.

Under ITAR, certain items, information, and technologies are designated as defense articles and services, and their export is subject to strict controls. Companies and individuals involved in the manufacture, sale, or distribution of these items must register with the U.S. Department of State and comply with ITAR regulations. This includes obtaining licenses for the export of covered items and adhering to specific compliance measures to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive technologies.

ITAR is particularly relevant to the defense industry, but it can also impact companies and individuals involved in activities such as aerospace, satellite technology, and other areas with potential national security implications. Violating ITAR regulations can result in severe penalties, including fines and imprisonment.
